Genesis Chapter 1:  Chapter Beginning to Verse 6

What you should notice:

• The 1611 edi­tion includes sum­ma­ries at the head of each chap­ter.  Many mod­ern study bibles have a book out­line located just before the begin­ning of the book instead.
• The extra par­a­graph for­mat­ting in the CPB (verse 3).
• The spel­ling used in the 1611 edi­tion is archaic.  Notice how u and v are fre­quently inter­changed.  The same often occurs with the let­ters i and j (not seen here).  Notice, also, the ſ, which resem­bles an f with the cross bar removed.  This is an archaic form of the low­er-case let­ter s.  My exper­i­ence was that I very quickly became used to the unu­sual (com­pared to mod­ern use) let­ter exchanges.
• The ^* in the 1611 edi­tion (verses 1, 3 & 6), which indi­cates cross ref­er­ences (found in the mar­gins, not shown here).  Mod­ern con­ven­tion replaces this with super­scripted let­ter­ing as is seen in the CPB.
• The CPB has more cross ref­er­ences in many verses in com­par­i­son to the 1611 edi­tion (verses 1, 2, 3 & 5), but fewer in others.  Num­ber and fre­quency of cross ref­er­ences var­ies greatly between edi­tions.
• The ^† in the 1611 edi­tion (verses 4, 5 & 6), which indi­cates a lit­eral ren­der­ing (found in the mar­gins, not shown here).  Mod­ern con­ven­tion replaces this with super­scripted num­ber­ing as is seen in the CPB.
• The incon­sis­tent spel­ling in the 1611 edi­tion (for exam­ple, darke­neſſe in verse 4 ver­sus dark­neſſe in verse 5).
• The dif­fer­ence in punc­tu­a­tion.

Genesis Chapter 2 Verses 19-23

What you should notice:

• Verse 19
  • The odd symbol ye (ye) used in the 1611 edi­tion in place of the.
  • The use of all reg­u­lar cap­i­tals for LORD in the 1611 edi­tion, which appears in small caps in other revi­sions (also in verses 21 & 22).  The dec­o­ra­tive cap­i­tals of the Ger­manic font, found only in the expen­sive 1611 fac­sim­ile bibles, make LORD look quite majes­tic.
  • The use of || in the 1611 edi­tion to indi­cate an alter­nate read­ing (found in the mar­gins, not shown here).  These extremely impor­tant notes — con­sid­ered neces­sary by the trans­la­tors — are omit­ted from almost all mod­ern edi­tions.  Mod­ern con­ven­tion also replaces this sym­bol with super­scripted num­ber­ing as is seen in the CPB. 
  • The fre­quent lack of spac­ing after the com­mas of the 1611 edi­tion.
• Verse 20
  • The use of a rather than an before the word help in the CPB.  Although this cor­re­sponds to mod­ern gram­mar, that rule has changed only within the last 25 years.  I can­not explain why it appears this way in an 1873 bible.
• Verse 21
  • The use of in stead in the 1611 edi­tion.  The replace­ment with instead is one of the inap­pro­pri­ate alter­a­tions made by the edi­tor of the Oxford Revi­sion and retained by the CPB.
  • The CPB ends the verse with a sem­i­co­lon and the sen­tence con­tin­ues.
• Verse 22
  • The odd sym­bol Æ used in place of and in the 1611 edi­tion.  Though sim­i­lar to _Ɛ| , it more closely resem­bles the char­ac­ter shown.
• Verse 23
  • The use of ital­ics on is, not found in the 1611 edi­tion.  Ital­ics show words added to the trans­la­tion (for the sake of proper English gram­mar) that are not pres­ent in the orig­i­nal lan­guage text.  Sup­pos­edly this use­ful fea­ture (ital­ics) was never a part of the trans­la­tion and was added in, as here, by edi­tors — even in the very first print­ing.  The edi­tor of the Oxford Revi­sion made a more thor­ough anal­y­sis and, as a result, iden­ti­fied added words over­looked by pre­vi­ous edi­tors.
  • The cap­i­tal­i­za­tion of Woman and Man, not pres­ent in the 1611 edi­tion.  This is a gram­mat­i­cal mod­ern­i­za­tion of spel­ling.
  • The 1611 edi­tion has fewer lit­eral ren­der­ings (^†) in com­par­i­son to other revi­sions — when such are pres­ent (as they are here in the CPB, notes 1 and 2).

Genesis Chapter 11 Verses 2-3

What you should notice:

• Verse 2
  • The use of i instead of j at the begin­ning of words in the 1611 edi­tion.
  • The 1611 edi­tion has fewer of the very impor­tant alter­nate read­ings in com­par­i­son to other revi­sions — when such are pres­ent (as they are here in the CPB, note 1).
  • The 1611 edi­tion cap­i­tal­izes East.
• Verse 3
  • The CPB has even more ital­i­cized words than does the Oxford Revi­sion:  about 50% more, in fact.  The edi­tor did a very thor­ough, sys­tem­atic job of deter­min­ing which words were added to the trans­la­tion by the trans­la­tors.
  • The Oxford Revi­sion shows an error here not seen in the others, using the word throughly instead of thor­oughly.
